Man in the Arena with Craig Spear

Consistency / Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

Craig Spear

In this episode of "Man in the Arena," host Craig Spear welcomes back listeners after a hiatus and introduces the podcast's focus on helping men over 40 master their health and weight loss goals. He emphasizes the importance of consistency, drawing parallels between maintaining consistency in health habits and the story of exploration teams heading to the South Pole. The Swedish team's consistent 20-mile march each day led to success, contrasting with the UK team's variable approach.

Spear shares insights from his own experience, highlighting the need for a system and avoiding overloading with too many changes when pursuing health goals. He previews upcoming episodes on beginner weight loss strategies and emphasizes the podcast's aim to provide actionable, bite-sized information for listeners to integrate into their lives.

The episode concludes with Spear encouraging listeners to engage with the podcast, share it with others, and apply the insights gained to make positive changes in their health and wellness journey.

Speaker 1:

And if you're a returning listener, thank you for checking back in. Thank you for being here. And if you're a returning listener, thank you for checking back in. Thank you for being here. And if you're a new listener, this is your first time listening to the podcast. Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to not only listen but to also invest in yourself. That's what this podcast is all about. That's what man in the Arena is all about About showing up, surrendering the outcome and doing uncomfortable work, all in the purpose of getting healthier and being your best health. Now you're here because you give a shit, and so I want to congratulate you for showing up and being in the arena.

Speaker 1:

I did take some time away from producing this podcast, but now I'm back and I'm ready to get back to offering you great content that inspires you to be as healthy as you can be. In saying that, I learned something really powerful about consistency as I took this break away from creating the podcast. I've been doing this podcast for over a year now and I was very consistent in my approach. I had a system that really helped me. Consistent in my approach. I had a system that really helped me and one that kept me on pace, one that kept me consistently producing these episodes. But then I deviated. I got away from my system, and it wasn't a drastic change, but I got away from my system. And something I want you to take away from this is our health is very similar. The approach that we take to our health is very similar, whether that's exercise or sleep, or how we eat or how we manage our stress and our mind, and so there are times when we're going to sort of get affected and our consistency is going to falter.

Speaker 1:

And it reminded me of the story about the journey to the South Pole, and if you've ever read the book by Jim Collins called Good to Great. He talks about this story where you had two exploration teams, one from Sweden and one from the UK, and the team from Sweden. Actually, both teams were both very similar. They had similar resources. They were both expert explorers. They had the same number of guys on each team. They all had access to the same equipment everything that was needed to be successful.

Speaker 1:

One thing that was different about these two exploration teams was their strategy, and that's what makes this story really interesting. Now, the team from Sweden their strategy was 20 miles a day to get to the South Pole, no matter what. Didn't matter if the weather was favorable or unfavorable, didn't matter if they were hungry or tired. Their goal was 20 miles a day, 20 mile march every day. The other team, the team from the UK, their strategy was dependent on all the other variables. So if the weather was favorable, they would go longer, they would go 40 miles. If the weather wasn't favorable, they would go a shorter march that day. If they were feeling well, they would go further. And so you had these two different strategies and really it was a tale in consistency. Obviously, the Swedish team was much more consistent in their approach and ultimately, the team from Sweden had a successful exploration. They reached the South Pole and they made it back. The other team unfortunately did not. They didn't make it to the South Pole and all of those people died on the exploration.

Speaker 1:

So why am I telling you this story? Well, whether it's creating a podcast, whether it's pursuing financial gain, whether it's pursuing results in your life with respect to health, weight loss, getting stronger, feeling better, consistency is so important. In fact, it's the number one thing I see in my coaching the guys that are the most consistent, they have ultimately the best success. The guys that lack consistency, they have much more challenges. So my experience producing this podcast really helped me really affirm just how important consistency is, how important it is to have a system in place, and something that I realized is obviously that system is really helpful and when you deviate from it, it can disrupt your consistency. But the other thing is not doing too much. That's that's where I see consistency really getting disrupted. I've certainly experienced that and I'm sure in certain times in your life you've experienced that as well.

Speaker 1:

When we try to do too much, when we try to lose weight too quickly or we try to change too many things with respect to our health. We're trying to focus on our sleep and our weight loss, and we're trying to eat better, we're trying to exercise. Trying to do all of those things at once. It's really difficult to stay consistent. It just makes sense, right? There's too many balls in the air. So that's why I want you, as you pursue your health, to focus in on one or two things, create a system around that. In the next episode, I'm going to be talking about beginner weight loss strategies and I'm going to really help you refine a few things that you could focus on to lose weight, and then we can talk about beginner strategies for sleeping better or eating better or exercising more. So, when we really focus in on a few key elements of change, that's where we can be our most consistent and, ultimately, be our most successful.

Speaker 1:

Now, with that, since this is my first episode back in a while, I wanted to reintroduce myself and the podcast to you, no matter if you're a returning listener or a new listener. I just wanted to give you some background, okay, just to help refresh the podcast, reset your expectations. So let me cover the who, the what, the when, the why and the how. Right, so let's start with who, okay? So my name is Craig Spear. I'm a men's health coach and, most importantly, I'm very similar to you. I'm a guy over 40 who is also doing this work. I'm doing this work right alongside you, so I understand the unique challenges that you face. I'm also an entrepreneur. I'm a business owner, so if you are also an entrepreneur or a business owner or you're a leader in your company, I understand the unique challenges you face in that respect as well.

Speaker 1:

We have all these different demands pulling at us all day, every day, and so how is it that we're able to also prioritize our health and optimize our health? So, as someone who is doing this work alongside you, one of the things that I want you to know is I'm constantly researching and learning and reading about all the different things that are important to a man's health over 40. And so I do a lot of that work for you and I want to bring it to this podcast so that you don't have to do that sort of background and research. You just get to benefit from someone like me who's pulling out the important information and then passing that on to you. So I do that, obviously, through this podcast, but I also do it through interviews as well. So I like to bring on other people who are much more knowledgeable in certain areas and have them explain certain things and certain techniques and strategies and ideas and opinions that will help you approach your health in a different way.

Speaker 1:

Okay, what is this about? Right, the what Well, man in the Arena. As I kind of explained earlier, it's all about. You know this. The title man in the Arena was inspired by Roosevelt's poem, you know, about showing up, being in the arena and doing the uncomfortable work and not listening to the critics who are in on the sidelines or in the stands, sort of not doing the work. So when you show up and listen to this podcast, you're trying to better yourself, you're trying to learn and understand how you can improve your health and your wellness. So that's what this is all about. That's the main theme of man in the Arena podcast, and so I try to bring different information, whether it's respect to your mindset, your sleep, your exercise, your nutrition, weight loss, and sometimes we'll dive into how do you have better relationships, how do you improve your career, because it's all related.

Speaker 1:

Now, when does this podcast drop? So if you are sort of on an insider to the Spear Method and Craig Spear Coaching. You're on my email list. You're going to get access to the podcast early in the week, so I drop a newsletter on Wednesdays. But I also post the podcast earlier so on a Monday in my blog. So if you go to the spearmethodcom slash blog, you'll be able to get early access to each episode. But you can also find this podcast on Apple podcasts and on Spotify. So I drop a an episode every week. So I dropped this podcast every Monday and Wednesday. That's how you can access it.

Speaker 1:

The last question here is how do you get the most out of this podcast? Well, I try to keep these podcasts relatively short, anywhere from five minutes to 10 minutes, and at the most, you know, 20, sometimes 30 minutes. If I'm having someone on the podcast and it's an interview, sometimes we go a little bit longer, but what I want to do is just give you bite-sized chunks of information, and so how you can get the most out of this podcast is literally just showing up, listening to each episode, sharing it with people that you are close with, because I think when we share ideas and information, that's how it really kind of gets integrated into our brain, and so that's how you can get the most out of this podcast and then, of course, trying to apply it in each day as you go forward. Now, some things will land, some things won't. They just won't jive with what's going on in your life, and that's okay. But try to give you the best cutting edge information, and so that's my goal.

Speaker 1:

Try to give you the best cutting edge information, and so that's my goal. Again, thank you so much for showing up, surrendering the outcome, doing the uncomfortable work. That's what this podcast is all about. Next week, we're going to be talking about beginner strategies with respect to weight loss. I look forward to that episode. In the meantime, keep showing up, doing the work and being uncomfortable. Now is the time to take action and change your life.
